After breakfast the guide picks you up. In Alaşehir, ancient Philadelphia, you visit the remains of the church of St. John. Laodicea comes next, the smallest of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor. The day ends at Pamukkale, ancient Hierapolis. The name means sacred city. The ancients believed Apollo founded it, and it was known for sacred hot springs whose vapours were linked with Pluto, god of the underworld. The city also had a significant Jewish community. In the first century it belonged to the tri-city area of Laodicea, Colossae, and Hierapolis, which is why Paul names Hierapolis and Laodicea in his letter to the Colossians. At the end of the tour you are taken to your hotel. The night is in Kusadasi.
